iReporter

BBC's iReporter is an online game where you play the role of a journalist covering a breaking news story. Throughout four levels, you have to interpret information, assess sources and separate the real news from the fake.

The game is a good discussion starter regarding critical thinking when it comes to news stories, but also a way to talk about the necessity to evaluate sources when the students write assignments.

The game can be played in its entirety, but if played as an in-class activity, one level is advised, as each level takes about 10 minutes to play.

The game does require a lot of listening, so if your students are not used to spoken British English, subtitles (English only) can be turned on in the settings (cogwheel in the right upper corner), and videos can be replayed. Due to a lot of sound in the game, headphones are advised, if this is used as an in-class activity.

Progress cannot be saved, so the game has to be played in one sitting.
